New Southern California earthquake shocks

An earthquake with a strength of 4.5 was reported early this morning in Orange County, California, just hours after the 4.4 magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks struck in nearby Yorba Linda, according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

"It's all just part of the normal seismic activity of California," said John Bellini, a geophysicist for the U.S. Geological Survey NBC News. "Earthquakes of this magnitude does not cause much damage."

Orange County earthquake occurred at 9:33 am PT this morning. The previous night, at 11:23, an earthquake 4.4 on the Richter scale shook the Yorba Linda area. At 11:25, an estimated 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck in the same area, centered two miles from Yorba Linda. The third quake - magnitude 1.2 - struck around 23:41 and was centered one mile from Yorba Linda.

Five more followed the earthquake within the next 50 minutes, the USGS reported. Everything is within two miles from Yorba Linda and ranged from 1.4 to 2.1 magnitude.

Epicenter in Orange County is located five miles from Placentia, six miles from Chino Hills, and eight miles from Orange.

No injuries or damage reported immediately after the earthquake, Bellini said, adding that many people may not notice an earthquake of this magnitude.

After the quake Tuesday night, all sources of fire are placed in the "Earthquake Emergency Mode," said Matt Spence of Los Angeles Fire Department in an emailed statement.

Firefighters from all 106 stations on Tuesday night environment has surveyed 470 square miles in the Greater Los Angeles area, Spence said, check the residential buildings, schools, power lines and transport infrastructure.

By 12:15, lifted Earthquake Emergency Mode and fire officials said they found no signficant damage or injuries reported.

Hundreds of Twitter followers and Facebook fans NBCLosAngeles.com reported feeling the quake Yorba Linda.


"Strong shocks in Whittier is looking for. Looking forward to anything after the shock," wrote YeaMe NBCLA Ceazon Facebook page.

Shallow earthquake felt from the Inland Empire to the beach. Residents in Fontana, Anaheim, Torrance, Hollywood, Long Beach and Los Angeles also reported feeling the quake.

"I suddenly heard a loud noise coming from what sounds like a garage roof in my garage and then a whole began to shake and creak," said Jose, in Burbank.

"I began to shake the bed and I was like, no more, and then I heard a pop, like a popping sound, and it kept shaking and shaking and shaking and so I got up to dress it stopped." Daphne said, in Bellflower.
